Between the imminent Avengers: Doomsday trailer, an absolutely bonkers Street Fighter trailer, a slew of game announcements at the 2025 Game Awards (I can’t wait for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic!) and this weekend’s release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Christmas is coming a bit early for the nerds.

But we’ve gotta talk about that Supergirl trailer. I was away on Christmas-related business this past weekend, so I only had the chance to geek out about the trailer for about 12 minutes last Thursday before merriment beckoned, but now that I’ve had a chance to sit with it for a few minutes … WOW. Not only is Milly Alcock a spot-on Supergirl – the brief glimpse of her character in James Gunn’s Superman last summer was a high point in the film’s feel-good finale – but this looks like a pitch-perfect adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. If you’ve read the book, you know they pretty much have to go there for the story to work, and if they do what the story demands, people are in for an emotional rollercoaster next summer.

But there’s other stuff to chew on in the trailer as well, and speaking of chewing on things, Krypto is just as adorable as he was last time around. Jason Mamoa as Lobo just makes sense. Action abounds. And perhaps most importantly, Kara Zor-El doesn’t act or fight like her cousin. Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) making a clear effort to avoid painting Supergirl as a gender-swapped Superman, which has been a common criticism of prior adaptations of the character.

But the film can’t escape feeling like a Gunn project, even though he neither wrote nor directed this. From the trailer’s Blondie needle drop to teaser imagery showing Supergirl with Walkman headphones around her neck, there’s certainly some Guardians of the Galaxy-ism that’s sneaking into the film – or at least its promotional materials. There are worst things to creep into the new DCU (I happen to love the Guardians of the Galaxy series more than most Marvel films) but variety of tone, character and story will be important as DC Studios builds out its universe.

Supergirl soars into theaters June 26, 2026. If you haven’t done so already, watch the trailer below!
