It’s here! A little more than one week after many Star Wars fans were confused/enraged by The Mandalorian and Grogu’s non-trailer Super Bowl spot, Lucasfilm released a brand-new, creature-packed look at the film, which will hit theaters May 22.
There’s so, so much to love about this 2:11 trailer. Aliens of all shapes and sizes! Rotta the Hutt! A baby Rodian! Zeb from Star Wars: Rebels! Embo from The Clone Wars! Heck, Martin freakin’ Scorsese as a fuzzy, four-armed shopkeeper! And, of course, we see plenty of our titular bounty hunter Din Djarin, a.k.a. The Mandalorian, shooting and blowing up bad guys as his little green pal Grogu waddles and coos his way into all kinds of toyetic mischief.
The plot seemingly revolves around our heroes teaming up with Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward to help the New Republic mop up some gangsters and former Imperials. We see loads of seemingly new planets, aliens brought to life with both digital and practical effects and the kind of all-out action we have come to expect from that galaxy far, far away.
“Do we run, or do we fight?” Mando asks at one point. We all know the answer, don’t we?
When the initial trailer was released back in September, I joined many others in thinking it pretty much looked like an episode of the show, just released theatrically. Based on this trailer, though, it seems director Jon Favreau is bringing a lot of cinematic flair to this adventure, making it feel a lot bigger than a truncated Season 4 of the series. I can’t wait to watch it on the biggest screen possible this May.
But until then, join me in carefully dissecting the trailer below for the next few months. This is the way.
