I’ve gotta be honest. I’m kinda done with multiverses. As much as I love Spider-Man: No Way Home and Sony’s animated Spider-Verse trilogy, Marvel’s multiversal tales post Avengers: Endgame haven’t really maximized the concept – heck, Deadpool & Wolverine made fun of it – and it’s felt like we’ve just been killing time until our action figures from every corner of the toy box mash together two more times in the next Avengers films, Doomsday and Secret Wars.
But there’s also a new Spider-Man flick in the mix, and Deadline reports that Marvin Jones III will play Tombstone, a.k.a. Lonnie Lincoln, in Tom Holland’s fourth outing as The Webslinger set to hit theaters next July. Jones previously played the character in 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, so there’s some nice continuity with this casting.
The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, will also feature Jon Bernthal as The Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. Given that Tombstone is a street-level villain, I’m inclined to assume this film will be more grounded, which is refreshing considering Spidey is the superhero most commonly associated with the multiverse these days. Sometimes less is more – especially when it comes to Spider-Men.
