A poor-quality version of the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer leaked late last month, but now it’s official: The cinematic X-Men fans have known and loved for more than a quarter-decade will be returning the big screen in the next Avengers film, which pits Marvel heroes from multiple universes against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
The new trailer, released this week, begins with a poignant conversation between Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen’s Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. Magneto, at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. They’ve had a contentious relationship throughout the film series, but it looks here like they’re on friendly terms.
“Death comes for us all. It’s all I know for sure,” Magneto says. “The question isn’t are you prepared to die? The question is: who would you be when you close your eyes?”
We then see James Marsden’s Cyclops – donning a Jim Lee-esque uniform – remove his visor and unleash the full force of his optic blast before the trailer concludes with simple text confirming the X-Men’s return in the film and a countdown clock ticking down to Doomsday’s December 18 release date.
I’m split on this one. I thought 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine was a fitting send-off for Fox’s X-Men, and featuring these characters so prominently in Doomsday will diminish the impact of the MCU-established X-Men whenever Marvel Studios decides to introduce then. Then again, it’s Cyclops in a comic-accurate costume, and there just might be a Sentinel behind him in this trailer. It’s fan service, sure, but I’m a fan and I feel served.
