Regrettably, I have yet to venture to my local AMC to see Avatar: Fire and Ash but, given that it earned $345 million worldwide this past weekend, something tells me that the James Cameron threequel isn’t leaving theaters anytime soon. My time will come.

At least some of the legions of moviegoers who contributed to that impressive opening weekend were those enticed by the teaser for Avengers: Doomsday that played before it, which heralds the return of Steve Rogers as Captain America. For the most part, I avoided the low-quality versions that have been circulating on social media so I could experience it in an official capacity. That moment came today, when Marvel Studios released the teaser on digital and social platforms.

“The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this …” directors Anthony and Joe Russo said in an Instagram post sharing the teaser.

The teaser is just that – a big tease. We return to Steve’s home where he settled down with Peggy Carter at the end of Avengers: Endgame and see him take his old Cap gear out of a trunk. But, SHOCKER, we also see him cradling an infant – presumably his son.

Those expecting something more substantial were no doubt disappointed, but it’s hard to be angry about the return of Evans as Cap. However, one can’t escape the feeling that this – much like bringing Robert Downey Jr. back to play Doctor Doom – is an act of desperation given the current ho-hum state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the box office. Cap intentionally passed his shield on to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson in Endgame, and plucking Cap out of his life with Peggy feels wrong unless the story absolutely demands it. Could this be a variant of the Cap we know and love? Or was Cap not quite honest about returning the Infinity Stones to their rightful timelines in Endgame and we’re about to see the repercussions of that? We’ll find out when Doomsday arrives Dec. 18, 2026.
