It’s no secret that director Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl takes massive cues from Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s excellent eight-issue miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but based on the film’s new trailer, it seems like we’re getting a pretty faithful adaptation. And that’s a great thing whether or not you’ve read the source material.
But here’s the snag: One of the most shocking moments of the series – now available as a graphic novel in multiple formats – was when the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, shoots Krypto with a poisoned arrow. It seems, at first, that Kara Zor-El’s furry, superpowered pal is dead, which is pretty devastating to the reader. We soon learn that he’s still alive, and Kara is in a race against time to save him. But for a moment, you live in that moment with her, and it’s heartbreaking.
The new trailer not only shows us the moment Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts) shoots Krypto but reveals that the arrow does not immediately kill him. Imagine how much more effective that moment would have been if DC Studios hadn’t spoiled it in a piece of promotional material. But I digress.
Aside from that fairly minor gripe, Supergirl looks amazing. It looks like its bombastic fight sequences – and there are a few – are balanced by several introspective moments as Milly Alcock’s party-going Supergirl looks to find her place in the universe despite her boy scout cousin Kal-El (we know him as David Corenswet’s Superman) urging her to come “home” to Earth.
Where the film deviates from the comic book is the appearance of Lobo, played with cigar-chomping glee by former Aquaman, Jason Momoa. It seems like The Main Man forms an alliance with Supergirl based on their playful banter during at least one key action scene. It’s fun stuff, and I can’t wait to see that dynamic play out in the film.
Supergirl soars into theaters June 26. Watch the new trailer below!
