It would be disingenuous for me to claim that Clayface is among my favorite Batman villains based on the comic books alone. But thanks to Batman: The Animated Series, I’ve loved this character for 34 years. The two-parter from season one, “Feat of Clay,” is heady stuff for a kids’ show, introducing a character whose obsession with vanity leads him down a very dark, painful path that distances him from his loved ones and even his own humanity. But that was less important to me at eight years old – I was into the fact that he was a big, goopy, shape-shifting slime monster.
Clayface debuts in the DCU this October, bringing us a disturbing tale of body horror as struggling actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) is disfigured and resorts to an experimental treatment that makes his body as malleable as, well, clay. DC Studios’ Clayface is helmed by horror director James Watkins (Speak No Evil), and based on the disturbing teaser trailer set to “Do You Realize??” by The Flaming Lips, this one is primed to break the DC film mold this Halloween … pun absolutely intended. I like what I’m seeing so far, and it’s great to see different genres represented in DCU’s output already.
